The Ask:
An internal request at IGN, create a 2D platformer to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the company.
Response:
Thanks to some prior experience, I was gifted the opportunity to lead the project. Partnering with a young independent developer, we set out to make a pixelart 2D side-scroller platform that takes players on a whistle stop tour of the biggest moments in gaming, movies, comics, and more from 1996 onwards.
First, I worked with a large, diverse group of internal IGN staff to determine what were the biggest moments of the past 25 years. This became the backbone of the script that saw IGN's mascot, Iggy, adventure through an always changing mix of places, people, platforms, and perspectives.
I lead an international team of developers across all facets of the game. Supervising the gameplay, the art, and of specific interest to me... the music.
Over the course of 7 months, we created a web game where every levels gave players a chances to experiences a bevy of moments from that year.
We created a live action trailer to promote the game's release, as well as many social posts guiding viewers to the game's dedicated page. The game was optimized for both desktop and mobile devices.
Totally free, we sweetened the deal for players holding a sweepstakes for a free console of their choice and a big-ol'-box of IGN swag, including a custom T-Shirt that was made for the game.
The game was nominated for a Webby award for it's original soundtrack.
To celebrate this, we released the full soundtrack and a commentary playthrough on our video platforms.
